Sok Hong Teow
Graduate Systems Engineer
After graduation from the Curtin University of Technology with a degree in Electronics and Communications Engineering, I accepted the position of a Graduate Project Engineer with Christmas Island Phosphates. Being small, there were only two engineers in the company, the resident manager and me! Being my first professional position, I was thrust head first into standards, vendors, contractors and reports. Benefits of working for a remote island community were the close ties with government agencies, resulting in me giving a presentation to the Environmental Minister in Canberra with regards to the demolition of a precipitation tower containing asbestos and citing the virtues of the Chinese community to Madame Fu, the Ambassador from China.
After 15 months, I decided it was time for a change of pace. I needed more technical experience and to actually do some engineering! I joined Calibre as a Graduate Control Systems Engineer and entered the Calibre Graduate Development program. Work with Calibre provided exposure to a wide variety of technologies. Easing into controls, I started with training manuals, then the LEAN principle and exciting work with Remote Assist technologies, followed by MES and then into the PLC and SCADA work. (I’m sure there is more to come, just have to ask!)
A highlight of the program is just the casual talks I get to have with my Mentor. In such a fast paced environment, it is good to take some time out. I feel privileged to have access to these people, who are willing to share their experience and help you put things in perspective. Being part of the Calibre Graduate Development Program helped focused my decisions as to the career path that would be best. I find it hard to decide what exactly I would want to do, as I have yet to experience everything! The world is very big and I am glad that I will grow into it with Calibre.

Undergraduate Civil Engineer
I am currently in my fourth and final year of studies at Curtin University and joined Calibre during the mid-year break on a full time basis. I work part time during the semester and this gives me such a large amount of experience that they simply do not teach you in Uni. My four year Bachelors of Civil & Construction Engineering includes a final year thesis of which I am at present completing in conjunction with Calibre Engenium. My interest in civil project engineering influenced the choice of my thesis; a water supply scheme for future works in the Pilbara Region.
I recently made the move from the Residential industry to the Mining industry and everyone at the company has helped make it the smoothest transition ever. More specifically, the Calibre Graduate development program assisted me in landing on my feet at the company in a personal and professional sense. Personally, I have easily made a huge number of friends through development days such as go-carting and paintballing, which I enjoy greatly. On a professional level, I have already started my CpEng as an undergraduate engineer and am aiming towards site experience upon graduation. Also, I have been involved in continual professional development seminars and courses through the program which are integral towards CpEng accreditation.
As an undergad in such a large company, a Mentor was certainly useful for learning the ropes, meeting new people and discussing where I want to be heading in my near future. I can relate to my Mentor and I never feel uncomfortable asking questions as he was in the same shoes when he started here after graduating from the Curtin as well.
In my perspective, the best things that Calibre has given me are a bunch of new friends, interpersonal and professional skills that you can’t learn at uni and the opportunity to shape my future career.
