Dr Paul Wilson appointed as new Calibre Controls Engineering Manager

It is with pleasure that Calibre Controls announce the appointment of Dr Paul Wilson as Engineering Manager.

Paul has been with Calibre Controls since January 2008 in the position of Senior Consulting Engineer assisting Anglo Coal on the Lake Lindsay project in Queensland. He has brought to our organisation a wealth of experience and technical expertise, having worked at organisations such as Sinclair Knight Merz, Placer Dome and Invensys, and from his role as a Senior Lecturer in Control Systems and Electrical Engineering at Queensland University for 19 years.

Paul has completed his Master of Engineering at Queensland University of Technology, and also a Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering at James Cook University. Additionally, Paul is a registered Professional Engineer of Queensland.

 

Morning Tea for a worthy cause...

At Calibre Engenium, each month a Fundraising Morning Tea is organised to raise money for charity. This month, the Bridges Team hosted the event and staff were asked to make a gold coin donation to participate.

As a result, $450 was raised and donated to the Royal Flying Doctors Service. Previous beneficiaries have included Beyond Blue, a community based organisation aimed at raising awareness and respond effectively towards depression. This initiative will be an ongoing event, with a different team selected each month to organise the morning tea and donations going to a charity of their choice.

 

Operation Christmas Child - All Systems Go!

Thanks to the hard work of Calibre staff Samantha Kelly, Tamara Winch-Buist, Dean Pascoe and the generosity of those at Calibre’s 10 Victoria Ave office in Perth Western Australia, more children will receive their first ever Christmas gift.

A simple shoe box containing clothing, stationary, hygiene products and toys brings joy and hope to children in desperate situations in developing countries, particularly South East Asia. Parents in the Calibre office have enjoyed taking their children shopping for articles for the box at the same time teaching them about giving. Thank you to all who have given so generously, the gift-filled shoe boxes have the ability to change their lives.

 

Fundraising Fever Hits Brockman!

Our hard working folk at the Brockman 4 site in the Pilbara region of Western Australia pulled out all stops whilst raising money for the Red Cross recently. As well as money raised from the staff onsite, companies including Rio Tinto, NRW, CCR, Portacomm, Ausco and ESS all contributed to raise a final amount of a whopping $12,720 in the space of a few short hours.    

Infrastructure Engineer David Hudson, announced he would also lose his locks in return for donations to the Starlight Foundation. Within 30 minutes over $18,500 was raised and after further donations from other team members and companies, a grand total of over $23,500 was collected. Incredible effort! Whilst on a fundraising roll, a quiz night was also held on site where over $10,000 was raised for the Cancer Council.

 

The pursuit of excellence - training aligned to the Australian Training Quality Framework

Calibre Safety Services has commenced a full review and update of its extensive suite of OHS Training packages. Where appropriate the new packages will be aligned to the Australian Quality Training Framework (ATQF) providing further training excellence for participants and clients.  The development will also see the delivery of previously ‘restricted’ courses being made available as ‘Public Courses’ delivered at the Perth and Jandakot facilities in Western Australia and at Thebarton in South Australia. Calibre Safety Services is also  delivering training at client facilities where requested. New Product Capability Statements will be launched on the Calibre Safety Services Website in early 2009.

 

5 million hours Lost Time Injury Free - Our safety success is no accident

The Calibre Global group of companies have achieved a significant milestone by reaching 5 million hours Lost Time Injury Free. This milestone could not have been achieved without a culture of “safety first” and a team of people who look out for each other. Staff across Calibre celebrated this special occasion with a morning tea and received a commemorative gift. Safety continues to be our number one priority as we march towards 10 million hours LTI free.

 

Young Engineers Australia Conference

10 September 2008  

On Wednesday 10th September 2008, the national Young Engineers Summit was held at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. A record attendance of over 200 delegates (some of which included Calibre Young Engineers) were there to partake in this year’s theme “The Universal Engineer”. A selection of high profile keynote speakers from industry, interactive sessions, networking opportunities and a poster session were all part of the day’s activities.

 

Cross Dress for Red Cross Day

Friday 5th September marked the annual Red Cross initiative “Cross Dress for Red Cross day”. Our resident IT Support Office David Shoebridge and Calibre Projects’ Administrator Tess Phipps, donned their finest cross-gender wear and visited a number of Calibre offices across town. Whether is was out of fear seeing Dave in a tight pink dress and fishnets, or the sheer generosity of our personnel, almost $750 was raised in the few short hours of collection. Well done guys on a courageous effort!

New "Safety in Design" Course for Engineers

Calibre Safety Services has developed a Safety in Design training package for engineering staff. The current boom in the mining and resources sector has seen major companies taking on an influx of both graduate engineers and more senior engineers lacking direct experience within the sector. The Safety in Design course outlines the Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental requirements that need to be implemented by design engineers based on 'whole of life' methodology for the plant and equipment. The course highlights engineering perspectives from design through to construction, operation, maintenance and subsequent decommissioning of plant. Calibre Engenium and OPR work on rail corridor options for Oakajee Port

8 August 2008

OPR (Oakajee Port & Rail) has been awarded the preferred proponent status for the development of the Port at Oakajee. Calibre Engenium is working closely with OPR on the development of several railway routes that will service both the mines to the south and the north and these routes will be passed onto Government for a decision on an appropriate railway corridor. This decision is expected in November 2008.

 

2008 Citect Integration Partner Program Award for Calibre Controls

As part of the Citect Integration Partner program for 2008, Calibre Controls has received the award for Most Innovative Project – Western Australia.

"This award is intended to recognize a unique and innovative use of our product. As soon as we saw their progress on HMI design and alarming using incorporating some of the Abnormal Situation Management* principles, we felt that we had found the right recipient for Most Innovative Project. It is great to see that our integrators are employing new techniques which will bring benefit to our end users" said Citect Key Account Manager Cedric Brown at the awards dinner presentation last night.

The new HMI and alarming designs are taking place as part of the process controls and communications scope on the Brockman Syncline No. 4 Project for Rio Tinto Iron Ore.

2008 is the second year running for Calibre Controls to receive this award from the company. Calibre Controls has been a Citect Platinum Integration Partner for the last few years.

Youth Focus - supporting young people in need

Youth Focus is a West Australian, non-profit community based organisation working with young people, aged 12 to 18 years, who are showing early signs associated with suicide, depression and self-harm. Youth Focus values young lives by ensuring the emotional well-being of young people, developing their self worth and offering them the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Ken Nolan joins Calibre Safety as new General Manager

Ken Nolan commenced in the position of General Manager for Calibre Safety Services and SRA (Safety & Rescue Australia) this month.

Ken Nolan has over 20 years experience in mining, smelting and refining with Rio Tinto and BHP as well as 12 years experience in emergency services. Ken leads both the Calibre Safety and SRA teams. Ken has formal qualifications in OS&H and Auditing and is a Chartered Professional Member Safety Institute of Australia (CPMSIA).

Ken will take over from Doug Rogers who is standing aside to focus on product development and consulting services.

Calibre acquire new Brisbane office to cater for expansion

Acquisition of the new premises at 545 Queen Street, Brisbane will enable Calibre to meet its expansion plans in response to the growing demand for our capabilities, particularly in Queensland.

"We considered a range of office premises in Brisbane and chose 545 Queen Street as we feel its modern "vibe" is a great fit to the Calibre culture. We are presently undergoing a rigorous recruitment drive in Brisbane, and we are sure both our present and future employees will enjoy the environment at 545 Queen Street", said Gerard Madam, Operation Manager (Queensland). "We are here for the long term. We have just signed a 10 year lease for new office premises of 2000m2 at 545 Queen St to accommodate approximately 200 personnel", he added.

In late 2006, Calibre established a presence in Queensland with the acquisition of our office at 444 Queen St.

Young Engineers win 2008 Global MERIT competition

Calibre is proud to announce that our graduates have recently won the prestigious 2008 Global MERIT competition for young engineers.

News just in from Loughborough University, Leicestershire, England, confirms that our two teams competing in the finals series have finished 1st and 2nd in the global contest.

With over 200 teams from around the world taking part, our three Calibre teams finished 1st, 2nd and 16th after eight weeks of gruelling competition.

The top 6 teams then earned the right to compete in finals held this week in the UK and via webcast.

Our winning team, "Stop, Calibrate & Listen", captained by Patrick Scanlon is bringing home the coveted trophy. Congratulations to Patrick and his team mates Marco Moutinho, Daniel Offereins, Sharon Wong, Bernard Wong and Irwan Mukmin.

Here's what the MERIT Website had to say about their fantastic effort...

"They came, they played and they conquered"! After a tense final round, in which the two Calibre teams were neck and neck in their battle to come out on top, it was the team who had flown to England for the final, "Stop, Calibrate and Listen" who were crowned the Merit 2008 Champions".

Congratulations also to our two other competing teams:

X-Calibre, captained by Vinzi Carcione, with team mates Hasan Ehdeyhed, Solomon Birnie, Andrew Bhatia, Barry Tan and Ben Ko finished runners-up. No small achievement and an effort to be very proud of.

As is the great effort of the Soks and Jocks team, captained by Sok Hong Teow, with team mates Aaron Brolsma, Ashley Harris, Benjamin Ng, Kaylene Price and Russell Porter who finished 16th.

Finally, a special thanks to Helen Pedersen and all our graduate mentors who continue to provide inspiration, advice and guidance to our graduates.

Calibre teams take lead in Global MERIT competition

MERIT is an acronym for Management, Enterprise, Risk, Innovation and Teamwork.

It is a computer simulation where participants from around the world learn how to manage their own fictional construction company by making decisions that affect the key functions of the business, such as marketing, tendering, finance, overheads, personnel and construction, and all in a 'safe' but realistic and competitive environment.

This year Calibre has three teams in the competition and with only a few weeks to go they're leading the pack.

In 1st position with 2,959 points is X-Calibre led by Vinzi Carcione, up 9% from last week.

In 2nd position and 10 points closer to the lead with 2,930 points is Stop, Calibrate and Listen led by Patrick Scanlon, also up 9% from last week.

Climbing rapidly and now in 13th position with 2,663 points is Soks And Jocks led by Sok Hong Teow, up 13% from last week.

Our teams have an overall average of 2,851 leading the nearest corporate rivals with 2,681 points.

New Safety & Rescue Training facility opened...

Safety & Rescue Australia (SRTA), a member of the Calibre Global group of companies, has recently opened it's new Jandakot training facility.

The Training Centre became operational at 7 Chullora bend Jandakot on February 11th when it ran its first public course at the new training facility. The 825sqm facility has been custom fitted for a range of training needs and is one of the largest specialist safety and rescue training facilities in the state.

Calibre Controls - Finalists in Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Supplier Recognition Program Awards

Calibre Controls succeeded in becoming a finalist in the Intellectual Services Category of the RTIO SRP Awards for Excellence. RTIO supplier companies are originally nominated for inclusion in the Program internally within RTIO with their performance then being monitored over a 12 month period. Calibre Controls participation resulted from initial recommendations from staff at Pilbara Iron, Paraburdoo.

The three finalists from each of the four categories were selected based on excellence in their given area of expertise and supply and invited to attend the prestigious SRP awards ceremony held in February at the Parmelia Hilton.

4 million hours without Lost Time Injury achieved!

This achievement demonstrates a solid commitment to health and safety in the workplace and an ethos of "safety first" throughout all levels of the company.

Calibre hits 600 mark and rising

30 December 2007

Calibre recorded another significant milestone in its history with its 600th team member joining the group. In six years, Calibre has grown from a workforce of 15 to 600. This could not have been achieved without a "results-focused" group of people who share a common vision to provide outstanding professional services.

The Calibre Controls, a member of the Calibre Global group of companies has grown to over 60 personnel during the same period.

Jack Hills Iron Ore project

15 December 2007

The Jack Hills Iron Ore project is one of the largest rail projects currently being undertaken in Australia. Calibre Engenium has now completed the first pass of the railway alignment optimisation analysis between rail chainage 50km to the Jack Hills mine (rail chainage 490 km).

Drainage design work continues in a southerly direction from the mine, with approximately 100 km of preliminary drainage design completed to date.

Calibre Engenium is working closely with Calibre Projects to interface between the rail and the mine site. The preliminary rail loop design for the mine site was notionally accepted by Calibre Projects and will be used as the initial basis for mine infrastructure layout that will be sent to the client for agreement.

Movember in full swing

The month of Movember has been embraced by many Calibre Engenium staff and is responsible for seeing David Boon inspired Mo's being groomed during the month of November by brave participants (known as Mo Bros and Mo Sisters).

For those people confused as to why the 70's look is prevalent this month, Movember is a charity event where Mo Bros/Sisters register at the start of the month with a clean shaven face, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their moustache and along the way raise as much money and awareness about male health issues as possible.

The money raised by Movember is donated to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue - the national depression initiative, which will use the funds to create awareness, fund research and increase support networks for those men who suffer from prostate cancer and male depression.

RGP5 Rail team powering ahead

Calibre Engenium was awarded the RGP5 Selection Phase Study for BHP Billiton on June 1. The Selection Phase Study is now complete and the project is now in a Value Improvement Phase prior to entering the Definition Phase.

The project will comprise some 300 km of new railway, some in extremely challenging terrain. It will also include a new operating system for the railway and is the biggest expansion to the rail network since they built the original line. Additionally the project includes 17 bridges, 11km of new culverts and 510,000 sleepers.

Calibre is again a major participant and sponsor of the recent Iron Ore 2007 Conference, held at the Sheraton Perth Hotel.

The conference attracted over 450 delegates from around the world and most were there to see Calibre Control's Julian Gonzalez (Manager Engineering Systems, Calibre Controls) present his paper on "Increasing Throughput via Improved Automation - More Tonnes, More Quickly from Existing Assets".
